----------------------------------------------------
1. Installing ScanBook
----------------------------------------------------

The procedure for installing ScanBook is different from that described
in Chapter 1 "Getting Started, Installation" of the ScanBook User Manual.
You must install the software onto the hard disk drive of your
computer before you can execute the program. You should have at
least one-half megabyte of free disk space available to install ScanBook
on your hard disk drive. While installing the software, you can select
a single preferred language from a list of languages to use permanently
while operating ScanBook. You can choose from the following languages:

	* English
	* French
	* German
	* Spanish

To install ScanBook, do the following:

	1. Insert the ScanBook diskette into the appropriate disk drive.
	2. Switch to the disk drive containing the ScanBook diskette.
	3. Type INSTALL and press Enter.
	4. Select the desired language when prompted.
	5. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the
	   installation.

----------------------------------------------------
2. New Features
----------------------------------------------------

ScanBook 4.25 provides the following new features:

	* ScanBook now supports only non-interactive READ commands.

	* ScanBook now allows you to configure the program to use the
	  SCANMARK 2500.

	* ScanBook now provides COM3 and COM4 support (for computers
with serial communication ports designated as COM3 or COM4).

	* The Configuration screen provides the option for testing
available COM ports and displaying the address.

	* The Verification screen displays the interrupt value (IRQ)
	  for the current COM port.

Note: The Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) in some older ATs may
support COM1 or COM2 ports only. ScanBook supports only COM1 and COM2 on
IBM PS/2 machines.

----------------------------------------------------
3. Changing Languages
----------------------------------------------------

You can permanently or temporarily change the operating language you
specified in the installation program. Each time you run ScanBook,
the program searches the contents of the ScanBook.txt file for the
proper operating language. The following sections describe how to
change the operating language either permanently or temporarily.

3.1. Changing the Operating Language Permanently

To change the operating language permanently, do the following:

	1. Switch to the DOS prompt.
	2. Copy the desired language file into the file named
	   SCANBOOK.TXT.

For example, if you wish to operate ScanBook using French, you would
type the following instruction at the DOS prompt:

	Copy French.L SCANBOOK.TXT

The general format for the command is as follows:

Copy [Name of Language File] SCANBOOK.TXT

3.2. Changing the Operating Language Temporarily

Use the MS-DOS environment variable SBLANG to change the
preferred operating language temporarily. The SBLANG variable is
used in the following manner:

	SET SBLANG=[Name of Language File]

For example, if you want to change the ScanBook operating
language temporarily to French, you would type the following:

	SET SBLANG=French

The SBLANG setting remains in effect until you reboot your computer
or reset SBLANG. The operating language then returns to the
original language chosen during installation.

3.3. Checking for Which Language is Active

To check for which language is active in SBLANG, type the following:

	SET

A list of current environment variables appears.

To reset the SBLANG variable, do the following:

	1. Type SBLANG=
	2. Press the space bar, and press Enter.

The language file must be in the current directory when executing
ScanBook.

----------------------------------------------------
4. OMR Compatibility
----------------------------------------------------

You can use ScanBook with all current SCANTRON Optical Mark Readers
(OMRs), including the Model 8600, SCANMARK 2000, and SCANMARK 2500.

4.1. Model 8600

The Model 8600 is designed to be compatible with other SCANTRON
series 8000 Optical Mark Readers.

4.2. SCANMARK 2000

The SCANMARK 2000 is designed to operate using the same form
descriptions used with other SCANTRON series 8000 OMRs.
However, since the SCANMARK 2000 has a single readhead, you must
modify any existing form descriptions that define two sides of the
same form.

Use the following guidelines when modifying existing form
descriptions for use with the SCANMARK 2000:

	* Remove all references to the second side of a form
from the zone translation commands in the form description.

	* Create separate form descriptions for each side of a
two-sided form, and combine the form descriptions into
	  a booklet.

The SCANMARK 2000 accepts both the Auto Reverse and the ScanThru
options of the Form Start command (FRM-FS); however, neither
command option affects the operation of the OMR nor the format of
data received from the OMR.

4.2.1. New SCANMARK 2000 Features

The SCANMARK 2000 rejects forms containing errors automatically.
The SCANMARK 2000 rejects the form backward (in the direction
of the input hopper) immediately after the OMR detects a form
error. If a jam occurs while a form is being rejected, you must
remove the form by following the correct sequence of steps.

To clear a jammed form from the SCANMARK 2000, do the following:

	1. Remove the form from the paper path of the OMR.

Note: The form is not ejected completely from the input hopper
when the form is rejected by the OMR.

	2. Press the END button (located on the front panel of
	   the OMR).

Note: Pressing the END button indicates to the OMR that you have
corrected the problem.

	3. Examine the form and either reinsert it or insert a new form.

4.3. SCANMARK 2500

The SCANMARK 2500 can be equipped with two readheads and
is designed to operate using the same form descriptions used
with other SCANTRON series 8000 OMRs.

The SCANMARK 2500 accepts and supports both the Auto Reverse
and the ScanThru options of the Form Start command (FRM-FS).

----------------------------------------------------
5. Using ScanBook with DOS and Windows
----------------------------------------------------

5.1. DOS Operation

You should attempt to configure the memory allocation to free as much
conventional memory (memory below 640K) as possible.
SCANTRON recommends that you attempt to free 600K of conventional
memory for use with ScanBook. You should configure SmartDrive (or other
disk caching programs) to cache reads, but not writes. (Sometimes this
procedure is known as "disabling delayed writes.")

5.2. Windows Configuration

5.2.1. SCANBOOK.PIF

ScanBook 4.25 includes a SCANBOOK.PIF file. When creating a
program item icon for Scanbook in Program Manager, point to the
PIF file instead of pointing to SCANBOOK.EXE. SCANTRON recommends
the following settings for SCANBOOK.PIF:

	* In the Advanced option, under Memory Options, enable
	  Lock Application Memory.
	* Set the Minimum Memory value to at least 400k.

5.2.2. Modifying the SYSTEM.INI File

If you add new hardware after installing Windows, your setup
might not be up to date. Check the Windows Control Panel or
the SYSTEM.INI file to verify that Windows is aware of the
actual configuration of your computer.

Some Windows default communication parameters can be changed only
by editing the SYSTEM.INI file. Verify that the entries in the SYSTEM.INI
for COMxIRQ= and COMxBase= (where x is the number of the COM port)
match the actual configuration of your computer. (If you believe the
settings in the INI file do not reflect the actual configuration
of your computer, you can use IRQS.EXE, included with ScanBook,
to determine the actual configuration of your computer.)
SCANTRON recommends you make the following changes to the
SYSTEM.INI file under the [386Enh] section:

	* Add or modify the setting for COMBoostTime to COMBoostTime=3
	* Add or modify the setting for COMxBuffer to COMxBuffer=1024

Note: The defaults settings are COMBoostTime=2 (two milliseconds) and
COMxBuffer=128 (128 bytes of RAM).
